Course Aim

The course is centred on the Modern Slavery Act 2015 which was introduced in July of that year. Key criminal offences within the act and ancillary orders allow senior investigating officers (SIO’s), investigators and practitioners to apply a broad spectrum of exploitative situations to the legislation.

Through audio visual material, case studies, expert speakers and interactive scenario-based sessions, MAGE will equip you with an in-depth understanding of the breadth and depth of situations where the legislation can be applied. It will provide you with expertise in the strategies and tactics that can be employed in criminal investigations to deliver positive justice outcomes against perpetrators and for the victims.

The course content aligns with the learning outcomes of the College of Policing’s modern slavery investigator course and will prepare you for the role of a modern slavery investigator. It will take you on a journey to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary to understand, undertake and apply the modern slavery and human trafficking investigator role.

The content will give you the confidence to apply policy and critical decision-making to differing scenarios and to develop intervention strategies to manage the safeguarding risks whilst still achieving successful outcomes by way of prosecution or disruption.

Learning Intentions

  • To explain the role of the investigator undertaking modern slavery investigations.
  • To explain the international and national dynamics, relevant offences and common factors associated with modern slavery.
  • To explain international, national and local resources engaged in supporting modern slavery investigations and how to make best use of them.
  • To explain the relevant skills and professional practice to be utilised by investigators involved in modern slavery investigations.

Learners

The course was introduced for law enforcement officers investigating modern slavery and human trafficking. However, the course is relevant to personnel within NGOs and charities engaged in modern slavery work, especially those dealing with victims and working with law enforcement agencies ‘operationally on the ground’. The course can also be considered in conjunction with bespoke consultancy to meet the unique needs of any organisation.
